What's Included

Choose from a range of gallery workshops, all of which:

• Include a teaching and assessment package
• Can accommodate two classes at once if the same session is booked for both.
• Are full of practical activities led by Station Gallery professional teaching staff
• Are cross-curricular in approach and wherever possible cross-cultural
• Are based on our permanent collection and often include current special exhibitions

What to Expect

Station Gallery will engage your students by integrating relevant curriculum and the arts. Full and half-day sessions include hands-on time on the galleries and in the studio. 

We take an in-depth look at pieces from our Permanent Collection as well as exploring our current exhibitions.  Students will develop and share personal responses to a variety of works. They will build critical skills to understand and enjoy contemporary Canadian art. The immersive full-day sessions continue in the studio, where students will be involved in the hands-on creation of artwork inspired by their gallery experience.

Through our nature themed workshop students will sketch, move and explore in a playful and supportive atmosphere.
Activities include object handling, shared learning, music, poetry and drama.

In the studio, students make multiple prints to create a completed landscape of their own.

Ready, Set, Art

Fun and full of frolic, together we explore the basics. Students play with colour, composition, shape and expressive use of line. Through interactive and sometimes a little “wild”, gallery activities, students make meaning out of the artwork and understand how artists communicate their messages. Students will make personal, even quirky connections to the artworks to fully engage their visual literacy skills.

In the studio, we will use our observational skills and develop beautiful artworks using watercolour techniques and oil pastel.

Talk About Texture

Looking at our environment through an array of different shapes and textures, students will touch, talk and feel their way through the artworks. Students will create vibrant textured soundscapes and make personal connections to the art, building their collaborative and visual skills. 

We will examine the variety of lines, moods and textural patterns that make up a work of art and investigate the basic elements including fore, mid and background.  

In the studio, students will experiment with mark-making and texture to create their own environment themed print.

Everyone views the world through different lenses; our ideas about the world and our own life experiences inform our perspectives of the arts. During this workshop students will reflect on the personal, sociocultural, historical, and political frames of reference within the works of diverse artists.
In true SG style we will engage, perform and listen to the artworks to develop reflections of social reality, and an experiential understanding of its creation.

In the studio, we will create a correlating mixed media artwork as an example of a personal contribution to our cultural environment.

Curriculum connections: Visual Arts: elements and principles of design, Language Arts, Fine Arts, Math, Drama, Social Studies.

 

My Place: Landscapes and You

Grades 4 – 8 Full-day – includes studio time.

 
Landscape art becomes more than just physical space in this session. Students connect with the idea of places, purposes and memories; understanding the value of public spaces through gallery explorations. Students investigate the basic elements of landscape art including fore, mid, and background and discover how artists share their feelings about places in their artwork.

In the studio, we work with a variety of materials to build their own landscape with a 3-dimensional component, based on a place that is important to them.

Curriculum connections: Language Arts, Visual Arts; Drama, Social Studies.
 

 

Visual Literacy

Investigate artworks from our Permanent Collection with this exploration that focuses on developing critical analysis strategies, Music, poetry, oral and graphic responses are used to comprehend what the images are communicating.
We collaboratively work to understand, repurpose and create visual content. Our enlightening interpretations lead us to respond in unique ways. 


In the studio, we create our own mixed-media artwork using an assortment of images and materials as a personal, meaningful response to artistic perceptions & intentions.
