PRINTMAKING – ETCHING
Adult
Thurs. September 30 - Thurs. October 21
6:30pm - 9:30pm
$125 member / $140 non-member
Find your inner Rembrandt! Etching is a print medium ideally suited to drawing with line and tone. In its simplest form, a metal plate is “etched” in acid. Ink is rubbed into the etched plate and the image is printed with the help of an etching press onto a damp sheet of paper. You many have marveled at the etchings and drypoints of Rembrandt, the aquatints of Goya and patterns rendered by Cassatt. Learn and try these techniques and others in our newly renovated and reopened boxcar print studio.
Hard and soft grounds, aquatint, chiné colle, drypoint and many other techniques will be sampled in this short course. Participants should bring drawings, photographs etc, because they will have the opportunity to explore their own visual ideas. Both those new to printmaking and those wanting to reacquaint themselves with the medium are welcome.
Materials fee of $15-$20. (4 sessions)
Most materials will be supplied (ink, tools, solvents, etching grounds, zinc plate)
Participants will need to bring some better paper (week 3-4) and may elect to purchase a second plate. Due to space and materials, class size limited to 5 adults.

10:00am - 4:00pm
$130 member / $150 non-member
A fun and fabulous day of monoprinting! Spend a day exploring the richness of this direct and spontaneous method of printmaking in our newly reopened print studio. Monotypes are a creative playground, a spontaneous approach to image-making where a new work can be derived from the previous one in an exploration of variations, or new works can be created from scratch every time. Inks are applied to a plexi surface and transferred to paper with a press. Layering these transparent colours, masking areas, removing and adding colour, are just a few of the ways to explore. Slow-drying, water-based inks allow for experimentation without time pressure and without the use of solvents. Clean-up is done simply, with soap & water. Bring a lunch. Materials fee of $15 payable to Artist Instructor. No previous experience is necessary, just a playful spirit.

Amanda Mills – Bio
Over twenty years ago, Amanda Mills learned what financial chaos really was. She got a job as Business Manager of a well-known Toronto theatre company where she spent the next three years dreaming that she could pay off the theatre’s half-million dollar debt with her own puny little savings.
When she quit, Amanda founded Artbooks, the first Canadian organization dedicated to helping artists and arts organizations with their financial management issues. The slogan was: May Your Next Crisis be Artistic in Nature.
Through Artbooks, Amanda worked with arts organizations, from Baffin Island to Halifax, to help them assess their financial health. She has taught business management and has helped prepare thousands of tax returns for writers, visual artists, choreographers, actors, filmmakers, broadcasters, and creative entrepreneurs.
Six years ago, bringing together her work on trauma with twenty years of business management, Amanda founded Loose Change Financial Therapy – the place where money and feelings meet.
Amanda has presented Loose Change workshops for the Toronto Women’s Bookstore, social workers, teachers, psychotherapists, artists, anti-poverty activists, sex trade workers and the general public. She has been a guest on radio and television programs including CityTV, CBC, and TVO. She is the subject of numerous articles in newspapers and periodicals across Canada, including Forum, Chatelaine, National Post, Toronto Star, Eye Weekly, and MoneySense magazine.
A tax professional and business manager, she is certified as a financial counselor under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. You can find out more about Artbooks here: www.loosechange.ca
