To mark our fortieth anniversary, an exhibition of photographs by Whitby’s first female commercial photographer will be featured under the historical roof of Station Gallery.
Marjorie G. Ruddy (1908 – 1980) took pictures of just about every aspect of Whitby’s life, from 1935 to 1960, when she retired. The photographs include news events such as Armistice Day, the Legion Drumhead Service of 1937, the Royal Visit of 1939, and the building of a new sewage treatment plant in 1948.
During the Second World War, Ruddy was a member of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps, assigned to numerous photographic duties in Toronto. Her work was featured twice in articles in the Toronto Daily Star. From 1946 to 1948, Ruddy was official photographer for the Whitby page of the Daily Times-Gazette. The photographer was elected to one term on the Whitby Town Council in 1949, the first woman to hold such an office in the town.
After her retirement, it was thought that she had destroyed all her negatives, but most of those taken between 1935 and 1951 turned up in Kingston and were acquired by the Whitby Archives. This is the first display of her work in Whitby since her death thirty years ago.
This exhibition is presented in partnership with Whitby Archives and is guest curated by Town of Whitby Archivist, Brian Winter.

Francis Muscat
September 4 - October 17, 2010
Celebrated glass artist, Francis Muscat features his latest fused glass and mixed medium works for the Fall at Station Gallery. The artist's works are also featured in the gallery collection and are on permanent display and enjoyment in the Yourspace Community corridor space. In contemplating his recent figurative series the artist reflects: "In my sleep I saw ethereal human figures falling from the sky, their fall was graceful and carried messages of hope and love, and human fragility."
